Have you been ghosted by a recruiter?

"It's completely unacceptable and you're damaging our reputation. It's a terrible experience for candidates."

This was part of an email sent to me by a hiring manager with my boss and HR on copy a few years ago.

I'd "ghosted" a candidate and not given her any feedback after her interview.

I'd tried calling her a few times to give the feedback and missed her. She tried returning my calls and missed me. This happened a few times to the point I'd just forgot to keep trying to get in touch with her.

The candidate emailed the hiring manager to complain.

At the time I had 90+ open roles that I was managing end to end.

You can imagine just how many candidates I was dealing with, how many interviews I was arranging, offers to make and hiring managers chasing me because their roles were super urgent.

Everyday I was in the office at 6am and leaving after 6pm trying to stay on top of things.

But the hiring manager was right, it was unacceptable and it was damaging to our brand.

When a candidate is ghosted, it's so easy to blame the recruiter. They're unprofessional, they don't care, they're incapable etc.

Or maybe they're just massively stretched, they've been spinning so many plates for so long that they dropped one.

If you are really serious about delivering an awesome candidate experience, start by looking at your recruiter experience.
